The worlds last nazi hunter has accused Australia of allowing alleged war criminals to escape trial, urging the Government to immediately deport Perth grandfather Charles Zentaito Hungary to face a military court.

Damier Canvas, who runs the Simon Wiesenthal Centre and heads a worldwide hunt for remaining World War II criminals, criticised the Australian Government for the delays.

“It is extremely likely that the Zentai cosplaycase will be the last case of an alleged nazi war criminal residing in Australia and the final opportunity for Australia to take successful legal action against any of Hitlers henchmen, who may have entered the country posing as innocent victims,” he said.

“If Zentaiis not extradited from Australia, it will mean that the Government has failed to take successful legal action against any of the many alleged Holocaust perpetrators who lived in the country, an ignominious result to a noble effort that ultimately failed miserably because of a loss of political will.”

A spokeswoman for Home Affairs Minister Bob Debus said everyone was entitled to have their case reviewed.

“Mr Zentais case has gone on for a long time but no decision has been made about the extradition order which is now before the High Court,” she said.

Mr Zentais son, Ernie Steiner, said if Dr Zuroff was keen on justice, he should let it take its course. “Hes already determined that my father is a war criminal,” he said. “That is certainly not the case in our mind. My father is innocent. He (Dr Zuroff) is really trying to meddle in the process.”

Mr Steiner said he believed he had uncovered documents which proved his fathers innocence. Statements which implicated his father in the murder and had been used as the basis for Hungarys extradition request were almost certainly given under duress during Hungarys notorious post-war Peoples Court trials.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre, which is dedicated to finding suspected World War II criminals and helping to prosecute them, says Australia has failed do enough and needs to take “additional steps, urgently”.

Australia’s position is in contrast to the US, which Dr Zuroff praises for launching dozens of investigations and managing to secure three prosecutions in the past 12 months.

Among the other most-wanted for war crimes during World War II is the infamous Alois Brunner, a key operative of Adolf Eichmann, who has found refuge in Syria.

Dr Zuroff says Canberra’s poor record in chasing Nazis who fled to Australia at the end of the war was exacerbated by the decision to shut down the special war crimes unit set up under the previous government.

“It is therefore extremely unlikely that they will be able to obtain any convictions while they continue to insist on prosecuting these suspects on criminal charges,” he says.

“This is particularly true in Australia, where all witnesses in such cases must appear in person, a factor which would make a successful prosecution next to impossible, given the country’s geographical distance from the scene of the crimes committed.”

Aside from Mr Zentai bodysuit, the Wiesenthal Centre earlier this year also tracked down another Australian pensioner suspected of connections to the Nazis: Hungarian-born Melbourne man Lajos Polgar.
